February Leech Lake Ice Fishing Report 2017

Here is your Leech Lake Ice Fishing Report from Leisure Outdoor Adventures Fishing Guide Service.  As temps begin to rise, the fishing on Leech Lake has picked up throughout the past week. Although rough, ice conditions remain very good throughout Walker Bay and all parts of the main lake. We are only two weeks away from the Eelpout Festival which signals the end of the Walleye season, so now may be your last chance to get up and enjoy the beautiful weather we are about to have.

Leech Lake Walleye

Over Night Walleye Bite

The walleye bite was strong over the weekend on the main lake during the evening and overnight periods. Goose Island area, Stoney Point and the Pelican Island area reported a pretty solid bite for both keepers and big fish, with most of the bigger fish coming during the overnight hours. Buckshot rattle spoons that glow tipped with a full minnow produced the best. A set line on a rattle reel with a plain hook and rainbow was a close second in producing fish of all sizes.
Walker Bay continues to steadily kick out smaller fish, with the bite seemingly moving back to the shoreline areas. 1st Point, Cedar Point and Breezy Point all produced fish over the week. As anglers start to move into position on sharp shoreline breaks to catch the infamous eelpout, they have been greeted with a few active walleyes as well.
The perch bite is beginning to pick up slowly, with most active fish coming from depths of 12-16ft on the main lake around goose island. A mixed walleye or two has been common along with searching these areas for perch, especially in the evening.

Leech Lake Fishing Guide

Leech Lake Guide Chuck Hasse with a surprise Leech Lake Pike.

Eelpout activity is starting to increase daily as we move closer to the spawn. Glow spoons such as a Big Nasty "Trout N Pout" spoon or larger glow spoons tipped with 2-3 minnows.  Eel Pout Festival is just around the corner and we have also made some new rule changes this year.  Check them out, we think it is going to help maintain our great Leech Lake eel pout fishery.  This will make things very competitive for everyone involved in the tourney, but also promote catch and release.  Win, Win in our minds!  Good Luck and get out and enjoy the spring type weather we are about to have!!!
