May 28th Fishing Report

Leech Lake

Leech Lake last week proved to have its up and downs and the weather has seemed to play a major role in that.  The days it is flat calm and high skies can make for some difficult fishing but being willing to adapt will help an angler out.  On Leech this past week, the Leech Lake walleyes were busy chasing shiners in 6-9 feet of water on many locations, getting them to bite wasn’t always the easiest.

Great Leech Lake Walleye

Jigs and shiners still produced. Try looking up the Arrowhead Tackle line up of  jigs.  Color has seem to make a difference when it is bright and sunny versus clouds and wind.  So make sure you have different colors tied on and see what they want. It changes by the day.  Lindy Rigs with Leeches, Shiners, and even crawlers are also starting to produce fish. As some bug hatches start, crawlers and leeches will continue to improve.  We also found luck fishing sand and gravel along 10-14 ft break-lines.

Look to areas around West Goose Flats, Duck Points, Traders Bay, and on the East side of the lake when the wind is blowing don’t forget about those wind blown points such as Five Mile, Sugar, and Battle points.  There are also still fish being caught around Bear Island.

Crappie fishing was fantastic for many anglers this past weekend as well.  The panfish are just moving into the shallows and making their beds. Be sure to use selective harvest and put some of those larger females back.  But this can be some fast and furious action and great for the kids. A float with either a 1/16th or 1/32oz jig and plastic, tube, or a lively crappie minnow will do the trick.  Be sure to use your eyes in the shallows because at times you can see them on those bright sunny days.

Be sure to stop in to Full Stringer Bait and Tackle in Longville to pick up your leeches, crawlers, minnows, and their top notch supply of tackle.

Mille Lacs

Mille Lacs Monster Walleye

The walleye and Smallmouth Bass on Mille Lacs were occupying skinny water on Saturday. Both species including a few pike were hanging in 4-8ft of water, around and between rock piles that topped out in 3-4ft. The bass were staging for spawn while the Walleyes were feeding in those same location. Artificial baits such as Rapala X raps and Jigging Raps both produces fish in these locations.

When the bite slowed, 1/8th ounce Jigs and Shiners our produced the artificials. With warming waters, look for the Walleyes to move deeper into the sand / mud transitions while the bass push up into their bedding locations. We should also start to see a movement of fish to the mud locations closer to shore as the water warms.

Be sure to check out Tutts Bait and Tackle for all your bait and tackle needs when you come to fish Mille Lacs.

Cass Lake

Walleye caught

Good day on the water for some fisherman from Birch Villa Resort

The key the last few days on Cass lake has been to be flexible.  One day the fish might be shallow, the next day deeper, but if you don’t adapt, you will leave the lake frustrated.  Case and point, Sunday I was 2 hours into a trip, hadn’t boated a fish lindy rigging in water 10-18 FOW. Therefore, instead of staying the course, we changed tactics and went shallow pitching reed beds and caught a great mix of fish.  The reeds I was targeting were adjacent to steeper breaks where my boat was sitting in 10-12 FOW and my clients were throwing their jig and shiners into 4-6 FOW. Doing this we had a solid day of catching walleyes, perch and northern pike.  The next day, thanks to the storms during the night, that shallow was not as consistent. Thus, we adapted again and went deeper and slowed down with lindy rigs and leeches or shiners. We found walleyes holding on underwater points in 14-18 FOW and perch on these same structure in 10-14 FOW.
