Fishing Report for the week of July 29, 2018

Fishing for our Leech Lake Fishing Guides has begun to pick back up on Leech Lake this past week.  We have been busy chasing walleyes and muskies this week, as well as hosting our annual Kids Fishing Event.

Here is the report from our guides

Leech Lake

Leech Lake walleye fishing has begun to pick back up.  It is still set up around feeding windows and reaction bites, but as a whole water temps are dropping and back around 70 degrees and the walleyes are getting more cooperative.

Fishing breaklines in 18-25 feet of water with a lindy rig and crawler, leech, or redtail chub has been a good technique, along with spinners some days. Offshore structure, such as mid lake humps or reefs are also holding some fish, but it is definitely a timing bite when trying to catch these, because they aren’t always up on the tops or edges feeding.

The crankbait bite is also still happening on parts of the main lake.  Trolling shad raps, flicker shads, and other styles of crankbaits in 12-16 feet of water has been a decent way to catching fish and covering ground.  2.2-2.8 mph and varying up your direction and speeds can make all the difference.

Muskies were also on the chow this past week, chasing bucktails, glide baits, and top waters.  With the full moon in full swing, they were actively eating during their feeding windows and our Leech Lake musky guides were seeing multiple fish each outing.  Rocks, deeper weed beds, and windblown points would all be good starting points.

Lakes in the Walker Area are also producing some good bass and multi species action.  Bass are being found on deeper weed edges as well as rock/gravel transition areas. Pitching tubes, ned rigs, drop shotting, or even top waters when the bait is near the surface is a great way to get in some action.  Pike are also hanging on under water humps and weed edges in 18-25 feet of water. Lindy rigs with sucker minnows is a great way to get it on some action. Remember many of these lakes have special regulations on pike and bass so pay attention when you put your boat in at the access.

Cass Lake

Our Cass Lake Fishing Guides were also busy this past week fishing on Cass Lake for walleyes.  The walleye fishing was overall pretty good in 16 to 28 feet of water. Pulling spinners, lindy rigs, jigging raps, and slip bobbers all worked at different times.

You have to be willing to fight off the perch, so keeping your baits moving, but also paying close attention to your electronics and understanding what perch look like and walleyes, can make a big difference.

Main Lake bars, underwater points, and weed edges is where our guides spent most of their time targeting fish.

Until next week
